This garage + library was intended to supplement the existing house of a former United States Congressman. The original triangle shape was designed by a landscape architect to be embedded within the natural terrain of the site. At the time of our hire, the entire building foundation had already been poured. The process could not be reversed and therefore challenge was to create an aesthetically pleasing, yet practically usable space within the confines of the existing foundation shape. The floor plans kept interior spaces open, leading to exterior patios and decks. Awkward 45-degree corners were negotiated by creating spaces to house art or sculpture or in the case of the bathroom, to locate the shower.
The sweeping building works in conjunction with the natural land slope and floor plan shape. Protruding wall elements firmly embedded in the earth with minimal fenestration and a sweeping roof form make for a fun, dynamic design that made the best of an awkward situation for the owner.
