Satellite Student Union

During the 1980s and 1990s, Texas A&M University's student population swelled, accomodated by an explosion in new construction. The existing student union, the Memorial Student Center (MSC), was quickly becoming inaccessible to a growing number of students as the campus expanded. Therefore TAMU's student government, in conjunction with the administration of the MSC explored the possibilities of a satellite student union center to accomodate the West side of campus. The center was to become a new tradition of architectural excellence and remain as a symbol of Texas A&M's future.

The satellite union is design with respect to a proposed arboretum and other buildings located in West Campus. This organic structure is embedded within the existing landscape and cradles its sloping contours. The two buildings that compose the center is split by a running creek. Facades facing the creek contain generous fenestration and are decked on both ground floor and sublevel to create views for visitors and employees. The village atmosphere created between these buildings is simultaneously serene and energetic.
