The Strahan Residence is a 3260 sf two-story residential addition to the existing Brooks Mercantile Building, restored in 1998 as the Buffalo Nickel Gallery. It is a sustainable design that includes insulated concrete form wall and deck systems, spray-foam insulation, a working greenhouse with water recapture cistern system, and a green roof. The green roof helps cool the building, increase the roof life span, reduces storm-water runoff and filter pollutants from rainwater.
Adjacent to the original building is a two-story residential addition that includes a garage, entry hall and wine cellar on the first level. The second level has two independent built spaces – the first includes a master bedroom suite with custom cabinetry that fits the architecture and the second includes a studio / guest bedroom that features a glass wall façade. Linking the two spaces is a deck for outdoor activities and navigating the roof. Corten steel walls give further visual appeal to the green roof and shields mechanical systems from view.
